Gum Disease Treatment

Periodontist Service

Here at Oracle Dental group, preventing dental disease is a fundamental part of our work. We aim to help you achieve and maintain optimal dental health through regular visits with our hygienists.

There are two main types of gum disease:

Gingivitis

The biggest cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. When brushing, flossing and inter-dental cleaning is not carried out properly, plaque builds up along the gum line, resulting in gum inflammation. This condition is called gingivitis and almost all adults will suffer from this to some degree throughout their lives. One of the earliest signs is bleeding when you brush your teeth.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated it can develop into a more severe condition known as periodontitis, which is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. With periodontal disease, the bacterial infection progresses to the deeper supporting tissues of the teeth, known as the periodontal tissues and includes the supporting bone. As periodontitis progresses, the bone supporting the teeth diminishes which causes loosening of the teeth, abscesses and eventually loss of teeth.

Smoking and Oral Health

Smokers are far more likely to suffer with more severe gum problems. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream and this has an adverse effect on the healing process. This means infections in the gums are slow to heal.

If you are concerned about gum disease, please contact Oracle Dental Group for a consultation.
